Home of the NewPage Rumford Paper Mill

Rumford first attracted the attention of early settlers for its falls, the largest east of Niagara. In the 1890s, this natural power resource led to the establishment of the Oxford Paper Company, now the NewPage Rumford mill. While less than 7,000 people reside in Rumford, it is the largest of the 10 communities comprising the River Valley Region. The town is also the home of Black Mountain, one of the top Nordic skiing areas in North America and the site of two U.S. Cross Country Championships.

Living in western Maine places you in the middle of a prime four-season destination known as the Western Mountain Region. In addition to offering skiing, snowboarding and tubing, Rumford boasts a snowmobile club with nearly 100 miles of maintained trails. Rumford is situated within easy commute of two of New England’s premiere winter and summer resorts, Sunday River and Sugarloaf Mountain. At both mountain resorts, championship golf courses designed by Robert Trent Jones Jr. round out year round recreational opportunities.

You also can take advantage of the opportunities for biking, hunting, fishing, boating, gold panning, golfing and hiking in the warmer seasons. You'll find many other cultural, historical and entertainment activities within a short drive of Rumford.
